This photographic miniseries is the second part of my ongoing series of ‘Greenhouse‘. Capturing this time the Botanical Garden in Prague, with his rich history. The oldest garden in Prague was founded in the 14th century by the apothecary Angelo from Florence. It was located where the main post office is located today. Charles IV also visited this garden. In the 17th century, the Jesuits had their own botanical garden in the Lesser Town, which was later sold. Maria Theresa established a new botanical garden in the Smíchov district in 1775, which became distressed by floods and industry and was finally closed in 1902. Prague University then acquired the Společenská Garden, which became today’s Na Slupi Botanical Garden. After the Second World War, the garden was merged into a single unit called the Charles University Botanical Garden. It was revitalised and reconstructed and today covers an area of 3.5 hectares. The garden is managed by the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Charles University and serves both as a teaching space for students and as a public attraction.
