Wall House No. 2

John Quentin Hejduk

The architectural masterpiece, Wall House Number 2, captivates viewers with its variety of shapes, blaze of color, and exciting details. It stands as an outstanding example of postmodern architecture from the 1980s and 1990s, emphasizing Groningen’s pioneering role in the field at the time.

John Hejduk originally designed it in 1973 as a weekend house, but it wasn’t realized until 2001 as part of the Blue Moon architecture festival in Groningen. Its characteristic feature is a 14-meter-high and 18.5-meter-long wall, from which organically shaped rooms are suspended. The entrance, an interior bridge, and an office lie on the other side of the wall. Since 2004, Wall House has served cultural purposes under the Stichting Wall House Number 2 foundation, offering artist residencies, public tours, various events, and functioning as a knowledge center.

: Wall House #2

Wall House, originally designed in 1973, remained unbuilt until 2001 in Groningen, thanks to the Blue Moon architecture festival. Another of Hejduk’s works in Groningen is the city marker along the A7 motorway, entitled The Tower of Cards.

Constructed as part of Groningen’s 950th anniversary celebrations in 1990, it stands out. The focal point of the design is a 14-meter-high wall stretching 18.5 meters. Various organically shaped spaces and rooms hang from this wall, with the entrance located on the other side.

In 2004, Stichting Wall House #2 acquired the building for public and cultural purposes. The house opened to the public in the summer of 2005, offering artist residencies and various events.

2016, the City of Groningen tasked the Groninger Museum with managing Wall House. Recognizing its significance, the museum saw potential in utilizing it for small-scale design exhibitions. This ensured its continued public use and cultural relevance, preserving its architectural legacy.
